Keyword Research for Beginners: Find Topics That Rank

Learn how to do keyword research as a beginner blogger — find low-competition topics, understand search volume, and plan content that drives traffic.

Keyword research is how you find out what your audience is actually searching for. Without it, you are guessing — and guessing rarely leads to traffic.

Start with Google Suggestions

The simplest free method: type your topic into Google and look at:

  • Autocomplete suggestions in the search bar
  • "People also ask" boxes
  • Related searches at the bottom of results

These show real queries people type every day.

Use Free Tools

You do not need expensive software to start:

  • Google Search Console — shows keywords you already rank for
  • Google Trends — compares topic popularity over time
  • AnswerThePublic — visualizes question-based keywords
  • Ubersuggest (free tier) — gives volume and difficulty estimates

Target Long-Tail Keywords

As a new blog, avoid broad keywords like "SEO" or "marketing." Instead target specific phrases:

  • "how to get adsense approval for new blog"
  • "best free keyword research tools for bloggers"
  • "how long does it take to rank a new blog post"

Long-tail keywords have less competition and clearer search intent.

Check the Competition

Before writing, search your target keyword and review the top 10 results. Ask:

  • Are they from big brands I cannot compete with?
  • Is the content outdated or shallow?
  • Can I write something more helpful or more current?

If the top results are weak or old, you have a good opportunity.

Map Keywords to Content Types

Intent Content Type
Informational How-to guides, tutorials
Comparison "X vs Y" articles
Transactional Product reviews, recommendations
Navigational Brand-specific pages

Build a Content Calendar

Once you have 20–30 keyword ideas, organize them into a publishing calendar. Group related keywords into topic clusters and publish one cluster at a time to build topical authority.

Keyword research is not a one-time task. Revisit it monthly as your blog grows and you discover new opportunities in Search Console.
